Isadore Sharp, a Canadian businessman with experience in the architectural industry, launched the company after he designed a motel for a family friend.

Designing the new business inspired Sharp to create a hotel of his own, which led him to purchase a plot of land in a rundown area of Toronto. The first Four Seasons Motor hotel opened in 1961, with a range of initial investors.

Following the success of the first location, Four Seasons began building new resorts for customers throughout Toronto. The organization eventually expanded to London and focused on creating more luxurious experiences for higher-class travelers.

Although the venture experienced some issues over the years, including bankruptcy in 1974, it still earned an excellent reputation in the hotel space. Interestingly, Four Seasons doesn’t own any of its properties but operates them on behalf of developers and real estate owners.

Who owns Four Seasons?

Since 2007, the famous technology icon, Bill Gates, has been one of the majority owners of the Four Seasons hotels through his investment company, Cascade Investments. Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is another major shareholder in the Kingdom Holding Company.

Bill Gates owns around 71.25% of the brand, while the Kingdom Holding Company owns 23.75%.

Unlike many other hospitality brands, the Four Seasons organization has yet to change its logos significantly over the years. Though the image has been slightly refined and simplified for a more modern audience, many significant elements remain the same.

1960

When the Four Seasons business was first launched in 1960, it created a logo based on its unique name. The name was intended to inspire customers to see the business as something they could rely on all year round to offer comfort and luxury.

At the bottom right of the tree, we see leaves beginning to grow, symbolizing spring; above, the tree begins to take on more leaves, in reference to summer.

On the top left of the tree, the branches are covered in leaves, which are beginning to fall towards the bottom of the branches. Perhaps the most eye-catching segment is the lower left portion, which is completely bare of all leaves, representing winter.
