A rich annual report design and organic materials combine to create a potent brew.



Cafédirect works with about 40 grower organisations in 13 developing countries to deliver Fairtrade hot drinks. It is one of the UK’s pioneering ethical businesses. Fabrik was briefed to create an annual report design to demonstrate why growers are at the heart of the organisation and explain the impact that their ethical, high-quality products have had on the lives of more than 1.4 million people. Quality was important from the outset, as Cafédirect has a growing range of great-tasting, ethical products. It was also vital to produce a document that met the highest environmental standards.


Fabrik produced a tactile perfect bound document on recycled stock that combined full-page images and coloured sections to bring each of the key themes to life. The cover featured an iconic product image reflecting the ‘Gold Standard’ theme that the organisation has adopted. This was complemented inside by fold-out cover pages – created using an unusual combination of coated and uncoated papers – that presented a timeline and growers’ map.

Following the success of the annual report, we applied the design across a broader range of literature to further re-enforce Cafédirect’s environmental credentials.
