As Co-founder at Fabrik, he directs the agency’s most complex naming and brand strategy engagements. Company and product naming programmes. Merger branding. The high-stakes work where getting it wrong is expensive and getting it right looks effortless.
Steve’s career began in 1988 at a fast-growing London design agency, where he learnt the entire creative process from initial concepts to final delivery. He went on to lead other agencies, including This Way Up, a specialist consultancy for the public sector. It was at brand consultancy Revolution that he met Stewart Hodgson, now his business partner. Fabrik itself was formed from the merger of This Way Up and Indigo – meaning Steve has lived the merger branding process from the inside.
Over those three decades, he’s worked with Barclays, Cable and Wireless, and Royal Scottish Insurance. More recent projects like Salad Money and Sight Scotland reflect his preference for work that transforms brands from the ground up.
He contributes regularly to Brand Fabrik, writing on naming strategy and the decisions that shape how companies present themselves.
Outside work, Steve is a musician. Drums first, then bass (but not drum and bass). His side ventures tell you something about the man. Scandinavian tourism, a journal celebrating the history of radio, eCommerce. Music. Beautiful scenery. Cutting-edge technology. If it’s a hobby, it’s probably a business opportunity.
